You Don’t Have to Know What You Want

Something I hear occasionally from someone considering a sensual massage is some version of: I’m curious, but I’m not exactly sure what I want.

That uncertainty can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. We’re accustomed to making choices, explaining ourselves, knowing what we like and being able to ask for it. When intimacy enters the picture, there can be an added pressure to arrive with a clear desire: I want this kind of touch. I want this kind of experience. I know exactly where my boundaries are. I know what turns me on.

But you don’t have to know.

Sometimes curiosity is enough.

There is something valuable about entering an experience without needing to decide in advance exactly what it should become. Sensual massage can create a space where you can notice rather than perform, where the question shifts from What am I supposed to want? to something much simpler: How does this feel?

The body is often remarkably good at answering that question.

A touch might make you soften. Another might make you curious. You might discover that something you expected to be intensely erotic simply feels relaxing, while something as ordinary as having your shoulders, chest, scalp, or hands touched slowly and attentively feels unexpectedly intimate. You may want more intensity, or less. You may want to talk, or become very quiet. You might even discover that what feels best is having no particular destination at all.

That is part of what makes this kind of experience interesting to me. Desire isn’t always a fixed thing waiting to be uncovered. Sometimes it emerges through attention, safety, permission, and time.

Of course, not knowing what you want doesn’t mean abandoning boundaries. Quite the opposite. You can be uncertain and still know when something feels good, when you want to pause, when you want more, or when something simply isn’t for you. A good experience leaves room for all of those responses without turning them into a test.

For some people, this is surprisingly liberating. There is no need to impress anyone, to have the “right” response, or even to respond erotically at all. Your body doesn’t owe anyone an erection, an orgasm, a revelation, or a particular kind of pleasure. It can simply have the experience it is having.

And sometimes, once that pressure disappears, something else becomes possible: curiosity.

You begin noticing sensations you normally rush past. You become aware of where you hold tension and where you instinctively protect yourself. You notice what makes you breathe more deeply, what makes you smile, what makes you hesitate, and what makes you want to move closer.

None of that requires a plan.

So if you’ve ever been curious about sensual or tantric massage but thought you should first figure out exactly what you want from it, perhaps you can begin somewhere simpler.

You can arrive curious.

We can discover the rest from there.
